Relationship/marriage counselling

We want our relationships to work. Most people are hoping for a relationship of love, respect, intimacy, friendship, commitment, newness, longevity and purpose.

BUT, partners don’t come with an instruction manual and unfortunately our relationships can often turn into war zones of resentment, anger, loneliness and confusion.

Contrary to the popular belief that if there is love, all the rest should just fall into place, relationships are hard work. We all bring our ‘pasts’ into our current relationship - ways of thinking how things should work, or responses to things we dislike or hurt us.

You need to know how to get it right for you and your partner. At Connections we can support and guide you in eliminating the core problems in your relationship.

Together we can tackle challenges such as:

  • Avoiding past injuries and hurts influencing your life today
  • How to disagree without losing respect for your partner
  • Negotiating changing roles and responsibilities at all stages of life
  • Reconnecting and repairing daily
  • Recovering from infidelity
  • Keeping the spark and sense of newness alive
  • Loving still despite illness/disability and trauma events
  • Managing the in-laws
  • Children or no children

We help you gain:

  • New understanding of how relationships work
  • Clarity with what you need and what your partner needs
  • Strategies and tools that actually work
  • The power to change destructive patterns right from the first counselling session

Healthy and strong relationships can inspire us to be the best versions of ourselves.

Family counselling

There is no doubt about it - family life is complicated! Family counselling can help with many family challenges, such as:

  • Parenting solutions
  • Assisting children/young people have a voice in family matters
  • Resolving conflict between family members
  • Foster and adoptive family issues
  • Separation/divorce for parents and children
  • Becoming a blended family
  • Grief
  • Stages of life: children leaving home, retirement
  • Unexpected events: living together with illness/disability, death

Tolstoy the Russian novelist said, “Every unhappy family is unhappy in its own way.”

So the task of family counselling is to assist families find their own way to better functioning.

A family is like a mobile: it can twirl around quite happily but if one part of the mobile is pulled, the whole mobile is disturbed. On the other hand, if the mobile is “immobilised,” none of the parts of the mobile can work separately and independently.

Instead of thinking only of the behaviour of one individual, a family therapist knows how to look at patterns, and behaviours between family members.

What is known as family counselling does not always mean that all the family comes altogether to all sessions. Sometimes it might be just the parents, or just the children, other times it may be various combinations or indeed it might be the whole family. Sometimes one person refuses to come - but using the mobile picture, if one person changes, it inevitably changes the whole family, perhaps even the one refusing to come!

As trained family therapists we will talk with you about who would be the most appropriate to come for each session.
